Dashain – The Festival of Victory of Good over Evil

Dashain, also known as Vijaya Dashami, is the most significant and widely celebrated Hindu festival in Nepal. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, Dashain symbolizes the triumph of righteousness over evil, as commemorated through the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

🕉️ Spiritual Significance: Dashain spans 15 days and falls during the bright lunar fortnight of the month of Ashwin (September–October). Each day holds deep religious meaning, with rituals centered around purification, blessings, and devotion. It is believed that during this period, the Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti (power), bestows her divine energy upon her devotees to overcome obstacles and attain strength, prosperity, and harmony.

🪔 Ritual Practices:

  1. Ghatasthapana (Day 1): The festival begins with the sowing of jamara (sacred barley seeds) in a clay pot, symbolizing fertility and prosperity. A Kalash (sacred water vessel) is installed, and daily pujas are offered to invite the goddess.

  2. Phoolpati (Day 7): A ceremonial procession brings nine types of sacred flowers and plants into homes and temples, representing different manifestations of Durga.

  3. Maha Ashtami (Day 8): This is one of the most powerful days of Dashain, marked by intense worship and the offering of animal sacrifices (mainly buffaloes and goats) to appease the goddess and seek her blessings.

  4. Maha Navami (Day 9): Dedicated to worshiping Durga in all her might. Tools, weapons, and vehicles are also worshipped on this day for protection and strength (known as Ayudha Puja).

  5. Vijaya Dashami (Day 10): The main day of Dashain when elders apply tika (a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermillion) and jamara on the foreheads of younger family members while offering blessings for health, wisdom, and longevity.

  6. Kojagrat Purnima (Day 15): The final day of Dashain when devotees worship Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, staying awake all night in prayer and celebration.

Cultural Importance: Dashain is more than a religious festival—it’s a time of family reunions, gift exchanges, feasting, and reflection. Homes are cleaned and decorated, new clothes are purchased, and elaborate meals are shared with loved ones. The festival fosters unity and joy across generations and communities.
